This is an excellent opportunity to work in a dynamic and supportive environment while contributing to the diagnosis and treatment of patients with sleep disorders.
Position Purpose
The Sleep Lab Polysomnographer will perform and monitor sleep disorder testing, including polysomnograms (PSG), Multiple Sleep Latency Tests (MSLT), and Maintenance of Wakefulness Tests (MWT). This individual will be responsible for collecting, scoring, and analyzing data, maintaining lab equipment, and providing critical diagnostic information to physicians and patients. The ideal candidate is passionate about patient care, detail-oriented, and eager to contribute to advancing sleep medicine services.
Responsibilities
- Perform and schedule a variety of sleep studies including PSG, MSLT, and MWT
- Score, evaluate, and archive polysomnograms according to established protocols
- Operate, calibrate, and maintain sleep lab equipment ensuring optimal functionality
- Monitor patients throughout testing to ensure accuracy, comfort, and safety
- Prepare comprehensive reports for physicians and referring providers
- Consult with healthcare providers, home care companies, and patients regarding diagnosis, treatment plans, and outcomes
- Provide patient education about sleep disorders, procedures, and post-study expectations
- Maintain accurate records and ensure compliance with medical necessity and insurance documentation requirements
- Support the mission and philosophy of the facility and adhere to departmental policies and safety procedures
- Assist in quality improvement (QI) activities and ongoing clinical training
Education and Certification Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Graduate of an accredited Respiratory Care program or certification by the National Board for Respiratory Therapy (NBRC)
- Certification by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (RPSGT) or ability to obtain within one year of hire
- Working knowledge of patient age-specific care
- Prior experience in sleep lab or respiratory care preferred
Clinical Skills and Competencies
- Proficient in administering oxygen therapy, CPAP, BiPAP, and other positive-pressure breathing devices
- Skilled in performing electrocardiograms (EKG), aerosol therapy, EEGs, pulmonary function testing, and arterial blood gas analysis (if certified)
- Demonstrated knowledge of patient safety standards, infection control, and emergency response protocols
