A staff respiratory therapist is responsible for assessing, treating, and monitoring patients with respiratory and cardiopulmonary disorders. They collaborate with healthcare teams to develop and implement treatment plans to improve patients' lung function and overall well-being.
Job Summary:
Key Responsibilities:

Assessment and Diagnosis:
- Conduct patient assessments to determine the extent and nature of respiratory problems.
- Analyze clinical data and diagnostic test results to make accurate diagnoses.
- Collaborate with physicians to develop treatment plans based on patient assessments.

Respiratory Treatment:
- Administer various respiratory therapies, such as oxygen therapy, nebulizer treatments, and bronchodilator medications.
- Set up and manage mechanical ventilators for patients who require artificial ventilation.
- Perform chest physiotherapy and airway clearance techniques.
- Monitor and adjust ventilator settings as needed.

Patient Education:
- Educate patients and their families on respiratory conditions, medications, and self-care techniques.
- Provide instruction on the proper use of respiratory equipment, such as inhalers and home oxygen systems.

Monitoring and Evaluation:
- Monitor patients' vital signs and respiratory status regularly.
- Assess the effectiveness of treatment plans and modify them as necessary.
- Document patient progress, changes in condition, and treatments administered.

Emergency Response:
- Be prepared to respond to emergency situations involving respiratory distress or cardiac arrest.
- Assist with intubation and other life-saving procedures as needed.

Collaboration and Communication:
- Collaborate with other healthcare professionals, including physicians, nurses, and physical therapists, to provide comprehensive patient care.
- Maintain clear and accurate communication with the healthcare team and patients' families.

Equipment Maintenance:
- Ensure that respiratory therapy equipment is properly maintained, calibrated, and stocked.
- Perform routine equipment checks and report malfunctions or issues promptly.

Compliance and Documentation:
- Adhere to all relevant healthcare regulations, policies, and protocols.
- Maintain detailed patient records and documentation of all treatments and interventions.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Respiratory Therapy or a related field (some positions may require an associate degree).
- State licensure as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) or Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT).
- BLS (Basic Life Support) and ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification may be required.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Attention to detail and the ability to work in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
